FanDuel app goes offline in D.C. as mayor yet to sign budget

FanDuel said its sports betting app in D.C. went offline on Tuesday as Mayor Muriel Bowser is yet to sign the budget.

Why it matters: Since replacing replacing the GambetDC app in April, FanDuel has been popular with bettors and brought in hefty sums for the District.

State of play: Without final approval of the $21 billion budget , FanDuel does not have authorization to keep running its app or its online wagering partnership at D.C. United's Audi Field.

    • "Upon final approval of the FY2025 DC Budget, FanDuel will resume its sports betting offering," the company said in a statement.
    • D.C. passed legislation opening up the sports betting marketplace to other third parties, but that can't take effect until the budget is signed. BetMGM said it was launching its own app in D.C. on Monday, but a spokesperson didn't immediately respond if it was online.

What they're saying: "We're going through our process," said Susana Castillo, a spokesperson for the mayor.

    • Bowser's office received the budget last Thursday, and has 10 days from that date to sign off on the package, Castillo said.

Catch up quick: Bowser wasn't keen on some of the provisions in the budget approved by the D.C. Council last month.

    • The council devoted more funding for housing assistance and raised taxes on businesses — frustrating Bowser, who wanted more cuts to spending.
    • The council passed the final version last Tuesday.
