WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) said it is removing seven trees from Garfield Park, following an inspection that was conducted after a large tree branch fell and killed a woman in the park .

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said 35-year-old Sarah Noah, of Southeast on July 10.

According to DDOT, D.C.’s Department’s Urban Forestry Division administered an inspection of all public space trees in the park last week. After reviewing the inspection report, DDOT decided to remove seven trees over the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for DDOT said this includes three trees that are considered dead, three that are in poor condition and a large tree that will be removed for precautionary reasons. In addition, DDOT will prune 82 trees in and around the park.

DDOT also said that just because trees are rated in dead condition does not mean they are hazardous, but rather that they “have run the course of their life span.”

“None of the trees in Garfield Park are cause of public safety concern,” DDOT said. “DDOT experts recognize the signs of a dying tree and take prompt action to help address them, as they do not contribute to the environment’s well-being.”
