    Gas prices: Slight increase at the pumps as prices remain higher than a month ago

    Gas prices increased very slightly on Tuesday, with the average cost for a gallon of regular gas rising to $3.502, according to AAA .

    Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election . With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris will have to address the country’s high gas prices, the overall cost of energy, and how both affect the economy and people’s finances. While there has been a decrease at the pumps in recent weeks and months, today’s gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

    Tuesday’s price was a small increase from Monday’s and Sunday’s when regular gas cost $3.501 per gallon.

    The average gas price was less expensive on Tuesday than last week when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.515. However, prices were more expensive on Tuesday than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.447.

    After months of having the distinction of being the state with the most expensive average gas price for regular gas, California was overtaken by Hawaii . The Aloha State had the highest average price for a gallon of regular gas on Tuesday, coming in at $4.675. Mississippi remained the state with the lowest average price for a gallon of regular gas, coming in at $2.985.

    Washington, D.C.

    The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday was $3.722. That was an increase from the day before in the nation's capital, when gas was $3.703. A week ago, the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.705 per gallon. A month ago, people in Washington paid $3.661 per gallon.

    Virginia

    On Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Virginia was $3.411. This was a decrease from Monday's average price of $3.418 per gallon. Gas prices are less expensive now than a week ago, when regular-grade gas was $3.462 per gallon. A month ago, a gallon of regular was $3.321.

    Maryland

    The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Maryland on Tuesday was $3.485. It was a decrease from the day before, when regular gas was $3.493 per gallon. A week ago, the price for regular gas was $3.561 per gallon. A month ago, people in Maryland paid $3.522 for a gallon of regular gas. However, prices in Maryland are slightly less expensive than this time last year, when a gallon of regular gas cost Marylanders $3.593.

    Delaware

    The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware on Tuesday was $3.401, a decrease from Monday's price of $3.405. Both prices are less expensive than the price of regular gas last week, when it cost $3.493 for a gallon of regular gas. Gas prices are less expensive, however, than a month ago, when people in the First State were paying $3.458 for a gallon of regular gas.
