    Some of the top performances turned in Watertown and Aberdeen area athletes from May 27-June 2

    High school softball players, American Legion baseball players and two youth fishermen make up the list of the Public Opinion's top area performers for May 27-June 2.

    Champions were crowned in Class AA, A and B in the state high school softball tournament that concluded Saturday in Aberdeen.

    High School Softball

    Jade Lund, Watertown — The third baseman earned Class AA all-tournament honors for the Arrows, who placed seventh. Lund batted .400 (4-for-10) in the tourney with two doubles, a triple, one RBI and three runs scored.

    Claire Horn, Castlewood — The eighth-grader did her best to help Castlewood repeat in Class B before falling to Chester in the championship. She pitched all 20 of the team's innings, recorded two wins and fanned 24 batters. She also went 5-for-10 at the plate with a double and four RBIs.

    Lilly Jacobsen, Castlewood — The Warrior catcher not only handled Horn's pitches but also went 4-for-10 at the plate with a double.

    Elizabeth Reiter, Florence-Henry — Reiter helped the Falcons win the consolation champion in Class B by fanning 21 batters in 18 innings and also going 3-for-10 at the plate with four runs and two RBIs.

    Katrina Haberg, Deuel — The Cardinals took seventh in Class B behind Hagberg, who struck out 43 batters in 16 innings. She also was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, five walks, one RBI and three runs scored.

    Haley Hlavacek, Florence-Henry — Hlavacek didn't make the all-tourney team in Class B despite going 8-for-11 with a double, three triples, two home runs, five runs and nine RBIs.

    Fishing

    Max Flatten, Watertown-Sam Spies, Sioux Falls — The high school seniors won the high school division in the TBF (The Bass Federation) Student Angler Federation South Dakota State Tournament held on May 19 at Lake Sharpe near Fort Pierre and the Bassmaster High School South Dakota State Tournament held May 25 at Lake Kampeska.

    New Milbank Baseball Field:The new Legion Baseball Field, part of a multi-million dollar project in Milbank, is now open for play

    They qualified for the 15th TBF Student Angler Federation High School Fishing World Finals and National Championship June 19-22 at Anderson, S.C. and the Strike King Bassmaster High School National Championship Aug. 1-3 at Dayton, Tenn.

    Baseball

    Kaden Rylance, Mitch Olson and Treyton Himmerich, Watertown Post 17 — In a 6-3 win over Sioux Falls East, Rylance scattered four hits and fanned 11 in six innings, Olson smacked two doubles and Himmerich also added two hits. Rylance also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Olson 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Himmerich 2-for-4 in a 7-5 win over Brookings.

    Markus Pitkin, Watertown Post 17 — In a 14-0 win over Brookings, Pitkin drove in four runs with a triple and a single.

    Casey Vining, Aberdeen Smittys — In an American Legion Baseball doubleheader sweep over Groton, Vining went 5-for-7 with eight RBIs.

    Drew Salfrank and Phillip Zens, Aberdeen Smittys — In a win over Lake Norden-Badger, Salfrank drove in four runs as part of a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. In another win over Lake Norden-Badger, Zens went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs.

    Dillon Abeln, Brevin Fliehs and Braxton Imrie, Groton — Abeln went the distance with eight strikeouts in a 9-0 win over Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern. Fliehs went 3-for-3 with a triple and Imrie 3-for-4 in the game.

    Jakob Steen and Cooper Pommer, Clark-Willow Lake — The Senators opened their seson with a win over Redfield. Steen drove in four runs with three hits, including two doubles, and Pommer allowed only two hits over five innings with nine strikeouts.
