University of Toledo Varsity T Club announces Hall of Fame class
Seven former University of Toledo athletes will join the Varsity T Club Hall of Fame when they are enshrined Oct. 25-26, the weekend of the football game against Bowling Green. Inductees will include Joe Conroy (football, 1974-78), Arnika Edwards Bess (women’s track and field, 1995-98), Natalia Gaitan (women’s soccer, 2009-12), Kylie Gamelier (women’s swimming and diving, 2005-09), Yolanda Richardson Swain (women’s basketball, 2009-13), Glyn Smith (football and men’s track and field, 1970-72), and Ron Warga (baseball, 1996-99). Also honored will be former deputy athletic director Dave Nottke, who spent 33 years with UT athletics before retiring in 2022. The banquet will take place Friday, Oct. 25, at the Pinnacle in Maumee. Tickets ($50 individual or $500 for a table of 10) are available from the UT athletic department office at 419-530-5087. The class also will be honored at halftime of the football game on Saturday, Oct. 26, against Bowling Green at the Glass Bowl.
Former Toledo football star Finn adjusting to Baylor, life in Lone Star State
WACO, Texas — Even though he has turned the page, quarterback Dequan Finn looks back on his time in Toledo with the fondest of memories. The 2023 Mid-American Conference MVP with the Rockets, who he helped lead to an 11-2 record and an 8-0 mark in MAC play by throwing for 2,657 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions along with 563 rushing yards and seven more scores, Finn after last season transferred to Baylor. In 2022, the Detroit native helped Toledo to a 9-5 record and the MAC title, earning offensive MVP honors in both the MAC championship game and the Boca Raton Bowl. For his career, he threw for 7,074 yards with 63 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and he rushed for 1,840 yards and 25 scores on the ground as a Rocket.

BOWLING GREEN — The running back room on Bowling Green State University’s football team will have a little bit of everything this season. That could add up to a lot of production and excitement. The Falcons bring back a proven star in Terion Stewart, experienced seniors in Jaison Patterson and Jamal Johnson, and a handful of freshmen who could provide depth as well. Although the injury bug has already impacted BGSU at the position, the Falcons have a wide range of size, skill, and speed that can make the ground game a strength in 2024.
Walleye reload on offense, look to build on defense in offseason recruiting
The Toledo Walleye will have plenty of offensive production returning next season as the roster continues to solidify this offseason. Six of the team's forwards from last season, including leading scorer Brandon Hawkins, are back in the fold. The half-dozen forwards that have been re-signed accounted for 49 percent of the team's goals last season. Toledo scored an average of 4.1 goals per game last season, the third-most in the ECHL. “We really liked our forward group last year and we've been fortunate enough to bring back as many of the key pieces as we could,” Walleye coach Pat Mikesch said. “It's a great way to start putting together the 2024-25 team.”

500 helping hands in Bowling Green assemble 70,000 meals
BOWLING GREEN — Volleyball and volunteering go hand in hand for Bowling Green State University student-athletes Kate Eigner and Sydnie Hernandez. “We try to get out as much as we can. We genuinely enjoy doing this. We fit it into our schedule,” said Ms. Hernandez, of Bloomington, Ill. They volunteer with the Bowling Green Kiwanis Club and the Detroit Pistons, helping children with special needs play basketball, said Ms. Eigner, of Bowling Green. The volleyball players were among 500 volunteers participating in Bowling Green Rotary Club’s Kids Coalition Against Hunger food packing event Friday at the Perry Field House. In a morning and afternoon session, they assembled 70,000 meals for local, national, and international food pantries.
Perrysburg’s Griggs gives MVP performance in All-America softball game
IRVINE, Calif. — Hayley Griggs, the incoming senior at Perrysburg ranked as one of the top players in the Class of 2025 and a middle infielder committed to Florida State, was named the MVP of the PGF Futures Game played Saturday night. She was selected earlier this summer to the prestigious All-American Game featuring elite high school juniors versus standout prep sophomores. Griggs was chosen as the game MVP after going 2-for-2 with an RBI. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when the juniors team scored four runs, capped by the standout’s single to center that pushed the score to 4-0 en route to the juniors winning 7-0.
