Jury selected as murder trial in missing man case gets under way
Prosecutors and a defense lawyer for a man charged with the death of his father chose a jury of five women and nine men Thursday, with trial testimony scheduled to begin Friday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court. Timothy Darrow, 39, of the 4100 block of Peak Street is charged with two alternative murder counts stemming from the July 27, 2017, disappearance and presumed death of Alvin Darrow, 63, from the 300 block of Majestic Drive in North Toledo. While questioning potential jurors before Judge Dean Mandros, prosecutor Jennifer Liptack-Wilson addressed the fact that there was no dead body found in the case. “Do you think that there is a rule requiring the state of Ohio to produce a deceased body in a murder case?” Ms. Liptack-Wilson asked. “No. None of you would be here then, right?”
Woman gets 30 years for deliberate car wreck that killed 2
A Lucas County judge sentenced an East Toledo woman who admitted to ramming her car into another in South Toledo, killing two of the other car’s occupants and injuring a third, to 30 years in prison Thursday. Judge Lori Olender said before sentencing Jasmine Pitts, 34, of the 400 block of Clark Street, that while the word “accident” commonly applies to all manner of traffic crashes, “this was not an accident by any means.” It may not have been Pitts’ intent to kill the victims, Judge Olender said, but the collision itself was deliberate — investigators estimated an impact speed of 80 mph. “There’s really not any words because this is so terrible,” the judge later said before remarking that resolving the case with a plea relieved the victims’ families from having to go through a trial and watching a video recording of the collision.

Titkemeier gets six months in jail for charity fraud
A woman who admitted to fraudulently accepting donations toward medical expenses for cancer she didn’t have received a six-month jail term plus probation and community service Thursday morning from a Lucas County judge. Lisa Titkemeier, 38, of the 3300 block of Oak Grove Place, wept in Lucas County Common Pleas Court as Judge Lori Olender pronounced the sentence after bluntly expressing doubt that she had, as she told the court, taken full responsibility for her having falsely accepted charity from relatives and friends over a 20-month period that included food and in-kind donations as well as cash. “I don’t think you take full responsibility,” the judge said, referring to a pre-sentence investigation report in which she said Titkemeier blamed her conduct “on some woman who told you to do it when you went to get some lumps checked.” Titkemeier had pleaded guilty last month a single count of fourth-degree theft. Judge Olender said that while such a conviction with no criminal record carries a statutory presumption of community control rather than prison, she thought she might have been able to overcome that presumption in this case because of the crime’s breadth.
