On Friday, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office posted about the arrest on X, saying the man was suspected of “fowl play.”
During the investigation, the sheriff’s office said authorities seized 39 birds, including 32 roosters from a property off Hudson Road. Some of the roosters had injuries that appeared consistent with cockfighting, said deputies.
Cockfighting, according to The Humane Society of the United States , is when gamecocks are placed in an enclosed pit to fight for gambling or entertainment. The fights can end with the death of one or both birds.
The practice is illegal in Colorado. According to section 18-9-204 CRS of the Colorado Revised Statutes , holding, sponsoring or encouraging a fight between or among animals for monetary gain or entertainment is considered a Class 5 felony.
The man was taken to the Adams County Detention Facility on suspicion of animal fighting and aggravated cruelty to animals.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office worked with Adams County Animal Management and the Bureau of Animal Protection to serve the arrest warrant.
“ACSO takes incidents of animal cruelty and animal fighting very seriously! Great job by our deputies, detectives, and our regional partners for saving these birds,” said the sheriff’s office on X.
The case will now be presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
