    July 31, 1924

    Monday was the hottest day recorded this year, with the mercury going up to 86 degrees.

    The Waunakee baseball team trimmed Cottage Grove 17-8 in a wild game. The locals had 18 hits.

    The tobacco crop is about two weeks late this year, and is expected to be about 70 percent stand.

    Mr. and Mrs John F. Kalscheur of the town of Vienna announce the birth of a son Tuesday, July 24.

    Marvin Mickelson had one of his fingers severely cut in a mower last week.

    Mike Simon celebrated his 9th birthday Tuesday by entertaining little friends.

    July 20, 1939

    Andy Schlitz will take charge of the Otto F. Hohlstein barbershop and will open in a few days.

    Alphonse Dorn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dorn, received painful injuries when he fell from a horse.

    The Waunakee baseball team played Wyocena here Sunday and won 9-2. The Wyocena team walked off the field in the seventh inning after an argument with the umpire.

    Threshing crews are busy these days. Grain is not running good this year. At the McWatty farm, oats went 24 bu to the acre and barley 31.

    Mrs. John Hellenbrand received burns about the face, hands and arms Tuesday when the gas stove exploded.

    Dr. R.H. Smits picked the first ripe tomato reported this year.

    July 29, 1949

    Miss Martin Tierney, 80, lifelong resident of the Town of Westport, died Monday in a Madison nursing home.

    Mr. and Mrs. George Ziegler, Cross Plains, announce the birth of a daughter at St. Mary’s Hospital on Saturday, July 23.

    A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Johnson on Thursday, July 21, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

    The Civic Club team scored a close 2-0 victory over Windsor on Sunday. Fritz Barbian got half of the Waunakee hits.

    Next Wednesday, July 28, it will be one year since a tornado hit the Ballweg and neighboring farms west of Waunakee.

    July 29, 1954

    Thomas Midthun, 83, well-known town of Vienna farmer, died last week Thursday, July 22, at a Madison hospital.

    Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lovick are the proud parents of a daughter born Monday, 26, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

    Dr. Lloyd L. Otteson, a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine, is associated in practice with his father. Dr. O.A. Otteson.

    Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whittaker, Waunakee, are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter at St Mary’s Hospital on Thursday, July 23.

    Mike Oliver and crew are busy installing curb and gutter in Waunakee and are expected to finish the job in a couple of days.

    July 23, 1964

    Marianne Watzke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Watzke, Waunakee, was named one of two representatives to the State Fair next month from Dane County to take part in the dress revue.

    A son was born to Mr, and Mrs. Jerome Maly, Waunakee, July 14, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

    A family reunion was held at the Legion Hall, Cross Plains, on Sunday, in honor of the 82nd birthday of Mrs. Adolf Laufenberg, Cross Plains.

    A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Heinz, Waunakee, on Monday, July 20, at Methodist Hospital.

    July 23, 1974

    Structural steel is in place for the new Carl F. Statz and Sons farm implement facility located a mile east of Waunakee in the Town of Westport.

    Joseph W. Endres, Waunakee, age 82, died Saturday, July 27, at a Madison hospital.

    Mrs. S.C. (Jan) Pulvermacher was elected State Senior Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary at the state convention in July.

    Twin sons are being welcomed home by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald H Acker, Waunakee. They arrived on Monday, July 29, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

    Waunakee American Legion Post 360 observed its annual picnic last weekend.

    The school board approved an agreement with St. Jon’s School to rent two classrooms for the coming year at a cost of $9,000.

    Suzanne Lynn Kamps and Michael Gregory Jankowski were married on June 2. Brian A. Littel, 28, died in a Madison hospital of injuries he sustained in a train accident.

    A Waunakee girl and her father sustained minor injuries after a dump truck driver reportedly forced them off the road and into a pond Thursday night.

    The Waunakee school board is considering building a larger intermediate school than was originally planned.

    Brews Brothers, the pub with more than 60 beers on tap, got the go-ahead to proceed with plans for the new Waunakee location on N. Century Avenue.
