The man convicted last month of stabbing a Mosinee Police officer in January will be sentenced Sept. 3 in Wausau, according to online court records.

Randy L. Beardsley, 41, was charged in February with battery to a law enforcement officer, substantial battery and obstructing an officer in connection with the Jan. 19 incident. On July 2, Beardsley pleaded no contest to two of the charges, battery to a law enforcement officer and obstructing an officer, and was convicted on both counts. The substantial battery charge was dropped but will be considered at sentencing.

According to a criminal complaint, the officer was wearing a full uniform and badge when he saw a man walking on the sidewalk on Main Street who appeared to be struggling to function. The officer turned his squad around to check on the man and discovered him lying in an alley, breathing but not responding to questions about his well-being, court records show.

The man, later identified as Beardsley, stabbed the officer in the leg. Additional units responded to the scene and a K-9 officer assisted in capturing Beardsley, who lists a Mosinee address.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was released. Beardsley was also injured and was taken to a hospital, where he was belligerent with medical staff and officers before being taken to jail, court documents state.

Beardsley has been jailed on a $100,000 cash bond since his Jan. 23 probable cause hearing.

Circuit Judge Greg Strasser will preside over the sentencing hearing next month.
