(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 90-year old former elementary school has been transformed into an apartment building.

There are 11 apartments in the former Todd Elementary School at New York Street and Oak Avenue, along with a health clinic and a gymnasium.

Architect John Cordogan says the rest of the project will soon be open with 36 more workforce apartments that are affordable for teachers, police and others.

Many of the apartments incorporate features from the old schools, including cabinetry and lockers in the hallways.

An entryway over the new Fox Valley Apartments still reads Mary Todd School. The school had been named for a former West Aurora student and educator.

School District 219 Supt. Jeff Craig called the transformation of the school building a significant milestone.

“The current building constructed in 1934 faithfully served the district for 85 years,” he said.

The building was vacant for the past five years.

The health clinic in the Fox Valley Apartments is about 3,000 square feet.

VNA HealthCare CEO Linnea Windell says the clinic will offer a wide-range of services ranging from sports physicals and immunizations to management of chronic conditions.
