BUCKHANNON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Monday marked the second-ever Upshur County Wellness Day, which gave elementary students from around the county a chance to get active as the school year draws to a close.

Students in third to fifth grade gathered at Buckhannon-Upshur High School to compete in a field day that featured various competitions like tug-of-war, wheelbarrow races and shot put.

On top of the physical activities, the event also featured education components with safety presentations from first responders and tips on how to manage mental wellness from school counselors.

“Health isn’t just about physical fitness. There’s also mental wellness,” Upshur County Schools Director of Wellness and Conditioning Eric Jett said.

Students from French Creek Elementary won the competition and were presented with the event’s trophy—The Wellness Cup. Tennerton and West Union Elementary Schools won second and third place respectively.
