CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — With a weekend of festivities ahead for the West Virginia Black Heritage Festival, the first stop on Friday was the green.

The West Virginia Black Heritage Festival (WVBHF) kicked off on Friday with the annual WVBHF Golf Tournament at the Bel Meadows Golf Course. This year, the tournament saw the greatest number of participants yet as 98 people came out to show their support.

Funding from the golf tournament goes toward the West Virginia Black Heritage Festival’s scholarship, which will be awarded to six people. Two of those who receive awards will also be crowned as the Junior King and Queen of the ceremony.

“It’s really to be just uplifting the black community and not just the black community, but how the black community fits into what’s out space in West Virginia. Our heritage and our culture in the state of West Virginia, the things that we’ve done in the past, and what we plan on foraging to do in the future. It’s a good mix of days of old and days of new,” WVBHF Board Member Kristi James said.

This year, the title of King and Queen of the festival will go to William Parker and JoAnn James. You can find a full schedule of events for the West Virginia Black Heritage Festival here .
