Public works officials seek resident feedback on airport connector project

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Charleston’s airport is seeing record numbers of people flying through and with that brings more traffic on the surroundings roads.

As a result, Charleston County Public Works held a community forum to share ideas on how to mitigate traffic around the Charleston International Airport.

The public forum was an opportunity for citizens to learn more about the project and voice their input before it begins in 2026.

Officials say the new connection to the airport will add two miles of new roadway west of I-526. The project will also add a new interchange at I-526 and West Montague.

The new airport connector is estimated to cost over 165 million dollars covered by Charleston County sales tax, state tax, and federal funding. They estimate construction will start in March 2026 and take about two years to complete.

Project Manager Shelia Parker explained some reason why the project is important.

“With the boost in tourism, the economy going, Boeing being right there, and their continued development on Montague Avenue these are all reasons to improve our infrastructure,” said Parker.
