MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – The Lowcountry is coming together to commemorate and honor those who have tragically lost their lives to overdose.

‘Light the Way for Hope, Together We Can’ is a remembrance event that will be held on Thursday, August 29, in observance of International Overdose Awareness Day.

According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department the Charleston area has experienced a significant increase in overdose incidents in recent years. Statistics show Charleston County witnessed a reported 5,590 non-fatal overdoses and 916 fatal overdoses.

In 2024, Charleston County had 102 fatal overdoses with 21 pending, police say.

“These numbers serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for ongoing education, support, and resources to combat substance use within our community,” said Mount Pleasant Police officials.

A 30-minute Narcan training and overdose prevention course will begin at 7 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Town Hall. After the training, there will be a lighting of the luminaries for ‘Light the Way For Hope’ to honor those who have lost their lives to overdose and to support the friends and families who love them.

Attendees will be able to participate in what officials describe as a deeply meaningful ceremony. Luminary bags with the names of their loved ones will illuminate the event. The luminous displays will serve as a symbol of the eternal flames of love and remembrance for those who hold a special place in the communities hearts.

Mount Pleasant police say confirmed speakers include Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie, Councilman Carl Ritchie, Mount Pleasant Police Captain Christopher Rosier, and Sergeant of the Mental Health Unit Steven Kudron. As well as Nanci Steadman Shipman, founder and executive director of WakeUp Carolina, and Dr. Chanda Funcell, Director of the Charleston Center.

The “Light the Way for Hope, Together We Can” event will be held at Mount Pleasant Town Hall, located at 100 Ann Edwards Lane.
