CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — This year’s Operation Honor Guard is dedicated to Sullivan American Legion member Robert Sims who died in December.

If you’ve ever been to one of the Operation Honor Guard events in the backlot, you most likely saw him there. Now, those who knew him best are looking back on his life of service.

“He did a lot of work, and it made the American Legion a little more enjoyable coming out here,” said Mike Daily of the Sullivan American Legion.

Sims gave countless hours volunteering at parades and anything else around the post.

“He was a very driving force for the honor guard,” said Greg Van Praag, Sullivan Honor Guard Commander.

Sims was picking up for a parade, looking for a lost American flag, when he was hit by a vehicle and killed.

“It was something none of us could believe,” Daily said. “He came out here and had to walk out in the street, it was a dark night and he was in his uniform since it was the Christmas parade. He had just driven the fire truck for the Christmas parade.”

Now, this year’s fundraiser is in memory of a man who gave so much to country and community.

“I would hope that other individuals learn from Bob’s example with regards to reaching out for other veterans and what an honor it is to be part of the Honor Guard,” said Van Praag.

Operation Honor Guard’s Day of Giving is May 15 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year’s fundraising goal is $120,000. To learn more or see where you can donate in-person or online, click here .
