DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — No one is seriously hurt after a Decatur Aldi was accidentally hit by a car not once, but twice.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the store on East Pershing Road. Sergeant Brandon Rolfs with the Decatur Police Department said the investigation revealed the incident was caused by accidental acceleration.

Rolfs said the person driving the car was an 89-year-old woman. While trying to park on the south side of the building, she accidentally pressed the gas pedal and rammed the building. The car itself did not penetrate the building, but did destroy the cinder blocks on the outside wall.

Rolfs added that after the woman rammed the building, she backed out of the parking spot, drove further west and tried backing into another parking spot. That’s when she accidentally accelerated again, hitting a metal side door with her rear bumper.

Rolfs said the woman was very disoriented after the first impact, which likely caused the second crash. Although she did not report any injuries, the woman was taken to HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital as a precaution.

    No driving tickets were issued.
