Central Illinois law enforcement team up for Community Unity festival at U of I

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Tuesday on the U of I campus was about connecting community members, students and staff with Champaign, Urbana and Mahomet law enforcement agencies.

The heat didn’t hold people back from going tent to tent, asking questions about their roles in the Champaign-Urbana area. Organizations also brought out games, snacks a dunk tank and ways to stay cool.

James Carter, a lieutenant with University Police, said they asked everyone to bring tents and water to stay hydrated. He said the South Quad was perfect because of all the trees and shade.

At the end of the day, he is glad they were able to make it happen because events like this are important.

“This is an opportunity to come out, interact with us, talk to us as normal people, get to know us, we get to know you,” Lt. Carter said. “If there’s any issues, or questions people might have, any services they would recommend, any comments or concerns, these are also opportunities for people to come out and get those questions answered.”

Places like Schnucks, Canes and the Champaign Park District also had games set up, and ways for students to volunteer or get a job.
