Flesor’s Candy Kitchen celebrates 20th anniversary of reopening, mural completion

TUSCOLA, Ill. (WCIA) — A Tuscola staple is celebrating not only the completion of a restoration project, but the anniversary of its reopening.

Flesor’s Candy Kitchen recently wrapped up a project to modernize the 150-year-old building it’s housed in . Part of those renovations include the Coca-Cola mural on the side of the building.

The business worked with Cola-Cola on the project, getting access to the soda company’s original painting guidelines from the 1920s, which the original painters used 100 years ago.

Flesor’s posted to Facebook its thanks to the people involved in the mural restoration.

This week, Flesor’s not only celebrated the completion of its mural, but also the anniversary of its reopening. The chocolate and candy shop was first opened in 1901 by Gus Flesor, but closed decades later in 1977. 20 years ago, the Flesor family stepped back in and turned the sweet shop into a Tuscola cornerstone.

“It has a really special place in my heart, but also the heart of the town. I mean, it’s on the corner of downtown and it’s been such a staple for the downtown since it reopened,” said Paul Nau, a member of the Flesor family. “It really helped to bring some life back down here as kind of a dying downtown in the early 2000s.”

The 20th anniversary celebration included live bands and musicians that included Nau himself.
