After nearly thirty years, Texas has a new man-made lake. The lake was designed almost forty years ago and Texas officials have been working for decades buying property, permitting, and construction. The lake is named Bois D’Arc and is located about an hour northeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

The lake is stocked with multiple species of fish for anglers in the area. Anglers can catch “Lonestar” largemouth trophy bass, bluegill, sunfish, channel catfish, crappie, and white bass. The lake features three public boat ramps with seven boat launch ramps.

Hunting will also have opportunities to use the lake to target waterfowl and other permitted bird species. Specific hunting requirements may be found on the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.

Recreational, fishing, and hunting are not the main reasons for the lake’s construction. The lake will also provide drinking water for thirteen North Texas cities containing about 2 million people. The lake delivers up to 82 million gallons of water per day. North Texas Municipal Water District Executive Director Jenna Covington said, "The addition of Bois D'Arc Lake to our portfolio water supplies will allow us to continue to provide that safe and reliable source of water for generations to come."

The surface area of the lake is approximately 26 square miles and has an average depth of 22 feet. The deepest part of the lake is about 70 feet. The lake cost about 1.6 billion dollars to construct. Texas officials expect the lake to bring in millions of dollars to Fannin County through increased economic activity and recreation. County resident will also likely see their property taxes rise as land values rise in the area.
