Warrick County Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on six homes, dedicates four homes in one day

CHANDLER, Ind. (WEHT) — Off Highway 62 in Chandler, lives are being changed in the Willow Cove Subdivision.

One homeowner calls Sunday a “dream come true.” That’s because after months of hard work — Warrick County Habitat for Humanity dedicated four homes, and six homeowners broke ground on their homes.

It’s an event where some homeowners became emotional.

“This happening right now — my first home. Unbelievable,” homeowner Erika Ross says. “I don’t even have words. I wasn’t even expecting to cry today.”

The events come as Habitat believes families are struggling since the cost of housing in the county has “skyrocketed.”

“We have a lot of families here in Warrick County who are trying to find homes and trying to find affordable housing for their families, and we are so excited to be able to provide that here in Warrick County,” says Amy Hobbs, who serves as the Warrick County Habitat for Humanity executive director.

After hours of hard work and months of waiting, some families — like Ross’s — wasted no time and started unpacking. This dream is certainly now a reality.

“We broke ground on April 1, so 13 months ago. It just felt like never ending, like it was never going to come,” Ross says. “All of a sudden, it’s here. And when Pastor Dave is reading scripture — I’m getting emotional again — it really speaks volumes to my beliefs and my faith and how grounded I am in faith. You just have to have that faith and things are possible. It may not happen on your timeline — in your plan — but it will happen if you believe in it.”

There is a story behind all the homeowners, including Patrick Johnson, who balanced raising a child, working full time and building his home.

He has a message for those six families who just broke ground on Sunday.

“Be patient. It is stressful. It is a lot of work, but, as long as you’re willing to put in the work, you’re going to be rewarded in the end,” Johnson says.

For those families just starting their homebuilding journey, Habitat hopes to move its six new families into their homes by the end of the year.
