VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — Students at the University of Southern Indiana are moving into their new campus housing ahead of the fall semester. Wednesday marks the first day new students move in for the school year.

By the end of the week, more than 2,000 students will come to USI for move in ahead of the first day of class on Monday.

The students living on campus represent all 50 states and 14 countries. Some are already getting situated, and two tell Eyewitness News they’re ready for the semester.

USI’s on-campus freshmen and transfer students come to campus on Wednesday and Thursday, and they are making themselves at home at college. One of whom is Ashlin Bailey from Mishawaka, Indiana.

“This environment really brought me in, and it’s so welcoming here,” says Bailey, who will study biology. “I’m really happy with it. I’m looking forward to the pizza party tonight and meeting my roommates. I’m also excited. I know there’s labs that they’re going to be part of my biology major.”

The move-in process begins with a receiving line of vehicles.

“They pick up their keys and a planner that’s provided by the university, and a map on where all the important things are that they would need to know,” says USI Housing Director Betsy Mullins.

It then continues toward the residence halls, where USI students are there to pick up the pieces.

It’s a small part of the fall semester that sets up these students for success.

“All the places around here look good,” says criminal justice student Blendon Virgo from Jasper. “I’m very excited to study and learn here at USI.”

Interim President Steve Bridges is on campus to help move in too. He will be sharing some advice with students here and during the upcoming convocation as well.

“I would tell them to embrace opportunities, to get involved in activities — even ones that maybe push them a bit,” President Bridges says. “They’re apprehensive. That’s when you learn to grow; that’s when you make relationships. So, don’t be afraid to step out and get involved in the activities.”

President Bridges also encourages students first and foremost to go to class.
