OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — About 500 athletes across Kentucky meet in Owensboro for this year’s Special Olympics state softball championship.

On the field, there’s priceless moments being made.

Some of the teams playing here are earning sports to play in the final championship games on Sunday.

While making plays in the field, these athletes are turning another crucial play at Fisher Park.

The purpose here is getting athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to show their skills. They may even translate to jobs and education after the final pitch is thrown.

“I do think one of the things they love is playing athletics and demonstrating their skills, but they also enjoy being a part of a team and supporting each other,” says Kim Johnson from Special Olympics Kentucky.

Just a couple players keeping an eye on the championship on Sunday are Owensboro Blasters players Jaime Shain and Zachary Lindsey. After coming off a victory Friday night, they say good defense is key to win.

“I hope we pull off tomorrow just like we did last night,” Shain says.

“It’s really fun to have all these fans and volunteers come out and help and support and help volunteer” says Lindsey.

There’s still time to watch Shain and Lindsey in action and bring a championship title to Owensboro.

They’ll take on the Northern Kentucky Giants at 9 a.m. for the championship.

“They’re all working towards a common goal — to show what they practiced for all season. They’re competing for a gold medal, and this facility is amazing. I think everybody’s really been impressed with what we have to offer her in Owensboro,” Johnson says.
