According to a notification issued by the town, MassDEP has implemented a Do-Not-Use Order for drinking water in the area of Heywood Avenue, the area between Colony Road to the west, Lowell Street to the east, Cold Spring Avenue to the north, and Memorial Avenue to the south.
As the investigation continues into how the water was contaminated in the first place, Mayor William Reichelt told 22News, “[They] spent most of the day running the water through the hydrants, and flushing the system… and they haven’t seen anything that is visible anymore in the water but because of the state’s orders… we can’t use the water.”
Mayor Reichelt says there were complaints initially from residents about an oily-film in their water but as far as they can tell, city officials say the contamination wasn’t caused from a breakage in the water system.
People living or working on the following streets should not use the tap water for any type of consumption until the problem is repaired and another notification is issued:
Lowell Street
Windsor Street
Bosworth Street
Baldwin Street
Norman Street
Allston Avenue
Heywood Avenue
Roanoke Avenue
Cold Spring Avenue
Colony Road
York Street
Exposition Terrace
Exposition Avenue
River Street and parts of Memorial Avenue
Test results can take up to 48 hours to return before the order ends. In the meantime, residents can access bottled water at The West Springfield Fire Department located at 44 Van Deene Avenue.
Residents impacted can also receive 10 bottles of water when providing identification that shows they live in the affected area. Calls can be made to the West Springfield Fire Department’s non-emergency line to schedule a delivery of water.
The Sady Pool Entrance, located at 425 Piper Road, will also be available to residents for shower-use Wednesday and Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Residents who need continued support can call the Mayor’s Office at (413)-263-3041 and schedule a time to be brought to Sady Pool.

The town’s DPW water division is currently investigating the back flow problem. West Springfield residents in need of drinking water should contact the West Springfield Fire Department at (413)-732-2650. Questions should be directed to the DPW at (413)-263-3242.
