WESTERLY − A 71-year-old man died at a beach in Westerly Thursday afternoon, according to the Westerly police.

The man appears to have suffered fatal injuries when a wave crashed over him while he was wading at Weekapaug Inn Beach, according to Westerly Chief Paul J. Gingerella. The police do not consider it a drowning, he said.

The police were called at about 2:45 p.m., and told the man had suffered facial injuries, Gingeralla said.

"He was immediately given medical attention by on-duty lifeguards," Gingeralla said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Gingerella.
