ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — Hot and humid conditions are expected across Southwest and Central Virginia on Thursday as a cold front approaches from the north. Scattered showers and storms are possible.

Although it won’t be as hot as Wednesday, the region will still have to deal with the heat and humidity on Thursday. Morning temperatures will start in the 60s and lower 70s before rising into the upper 80s and lower/middle 90s by the afternoon. Due to the humid air, heat index values near 100 are possible east of the Blue Ridge.

Showers and storms will have the chance to impact the region during the afternoon and evening hours. The heat and humidity will create instability; strong to severe thunderstorms may develop. Stronger storms may produce gusty winds, hail, and downpours.

Scattered showers and storms will remain a daily occurrence through the weekend. Although all-day rain is not anticipated, you may want to keep the umbrella handy. Thunderstorms could produce locally heavy rainfall.

It will also become seasonably warm, starting on Friday. Highs will generally be in the near-average 80s while morning lows will be in the 60s.

Conditions will trend drier and cooler for the first half of the upcoming week. Due to a passing cold front, isolated showers and storms cannot be ruled out for Labor Day. Otherwise, a mix of sun and clouds will be overhead with highs in the upper 70s and lower/middle 80s.

Isolated showers remain possible for Tuesday and Wednesday, but much of the region will stay mostly dry. It will be fall-like with highs in the 70s. Morning lows will be in the lower 60s and 50s.
