Search underway after teen girl injured in apparent random stabbing attack in Lake County, Indiana

LOWELL, Ind. — Authorities in Lake County, Indiana, are warning residents to keep their homes and vehicles locked as deputies search for the person responsible for stabbing a teen girl in an apparent random attack at a baseball game in Lowell on Saturday.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies said in a Facebook post the stabbing unfolded around 3:45 p.m. at the VFW baseball field near West 173rd Street and Morse Street in unincorporated Lowell, while the 14-year-old girl was watching her brother’s baseball game with her mother.

According to deputies, while watching the game, an unknown individual attacked the teen girl and attempted to stab her. When the teen’s mother attempted to intervene, the attacker attempted to stab her as well.

Following the incident, authorities recovered what they called a “butcher-style knife” that was believed to have been used in the attack.

The teen girl was later treated at the hospital and released.

Deputies said in a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon that following the stabbing, a male subject was chased into a nearby wooded area.

Lake County K9 and aviation units, detectives and patrol officers from several surrounding areas aided in the search for the person responsible.

Deputies described the wanted individual as a “dark-skinned male” who has long hair and was last spotted in a wooded area behind homes in the 6100 block of Oak Valley Drive in Lowell.

Authorities said they believe he is in his 20s and was spotted wearing a burgundy top and black shorts at the time of the incident.

Deputies are warning residents in the area that the person they are searching for may be with other males and they should be considered armed and dangerous.

Residents who live near the area where the stabbing occurred are advised to keep their homes and vehicles locked and notify authorities of any suspicious activity.
