NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — Thursday, Aug. 29 marks the 19th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a storm to remember for years to come as it changed the trajectory of the City of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana’s infrastructure.

At 6:10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, the Category 3 storm made landfall in Buras, Louisiana, a small town in Plaquemines Parish. The winds sustained speeds of 125 mph heading north at 15 mph.

By 8:12 a.m., power across the state was lost and the first levee breech was reported, sending 15 to 20 feet of the Mississippi River into New Orleans streets and neighborhood, inundating 80% of the city.

Aerial photos showed the aftermath of residents asking for help while trapped on the roofs of their homes in the Lower Ninth Ward and throughout the city.

Officials with the National Weather Service reported Katrina birthed five tornadoes in the Louisiana and Mississippi areas.

Looking back at Hurricane Katrina’s pet rescues

Every year since the storm, New Orleans representatives, the city council, elected officials and other community leaders lay a wreath at the memorial site where almost 100 unclaimed or unidentified victims are interred.

The memorial is within the boundary of Charity Hospital Cemetary.

Officials with St. Bernard Parish also held a ceremony at Shell Beach where they read the names of 164 residents who lost their lives. A wreath was laid in the Mississippi River by surviving family members.
