As reported on News Center 7 at 5:30 , extreme heat has brought the hottest temperatures the Miami Valley has seen in decades.

News Center 7′s John Bedell spent time talking to Trotwood-Madison’s Athletic Director Jonas Smith about what they’re doing to keep everyone safe on the sidelines.

Trotwood-Madison Rams and the Kettering Fairmont Firebirds game kicks off at 7 p.m.

This week, football and other varsity sports have had to practice inside due to the heat at Trotwood-Madison. Smith said they are taking precautions tonight too.

It’s been so hot at the stadium this week – football and other varsity sports have had to move practice inside. They’re taking precautions tonight too.

“I’ve lived in California and even Arizona. But this weather, it’s just too much,” Dayton resident Lorna Laurie said.

Temperatures have been high in the Miami Valley all week.

“Unbearable. It’s bearable, but it’s intense. Intense!” West Carrollton resident Kristy Bombatch said.

The heat brought some concerns for students practicing and playing outside after school.

    “I am concerned,” Laurie said.

“Hopefully playing later helps, you know, later in the evening,” Bombatch said.

Several area school districts told News Center 7 that they have pushed their kickoff times back, including Huber Heights City School District, Dayton Public Schools, and Troy City Schools.

Trotwood-Madison and Kettering Fairmont are not moving their game back.

“I consulted with Kettering Health. We’re a Kettering Health Facility, as well as Fairmont and we talked this morning,” Smith said.

Smith said players and cheerleaders will get frequent water breaks, more so than a normal game.

They will also have medical staff and first responders on site for everyone’s safety.

“We’ll have two athletic trainers on our sideline as well as Fairmont will and team doctors on both sidelines. And then we work with the city of Trotwood. Their EMT will be out here. So I think we’re well prepared,” Smith said.

News Center 7 polled 14 school districts about what they’ve been doing to protect kids during outdoor after-school activities this week.

All of them who responded, including Trotwood-Madison, said they always defer the decision-making to their athletic trainers and their medical expertise.
