A 15-year-old was arrested after a fight Monday night in downtown Wichita that led to a man being shot, police said.

The teen, who is from Wichita, was taken into custody and faces charges of aggravated battery and attempted murder, Wichita police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo said Tuesday.

The shooting victim, a 64-year-old Wichita man, was taken to a local hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded to a report of a large disturbance at the 100 block of Saint Francis at 11:25 p.m. Another call about a shooting victim in the 100 block of S. Broadway came in afterward, according to Rebolledo.

The shooting occurred at the Saint Francis address, Rebolledo added.

Police found the man at the Broadway location with a gunshot wound in his left shoulder. Detectives learned the man and his wife had been walking in the Naftzger Park area when the couple allegedly got into an argument with a large group of teens and young adults, some in their early 20s, police said.

“The argument escalated into a physical altercation, leading to several individuals pursuing the victim to a nearby parking lot, where the 15-year-old male suspect shot the victim before fleeing the area,” Rebolledo said.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call detectives at 316-268-4407 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 .
