Pennsylvania College of Technology receives $4M grant for apprenticeship programs

The U.S. Department of Labor recently awarded the Pennsylvania College of Technology a $4 million Apprenticeship Building America (ABA) program grant to expand registered apprenticeship programs.

The college will use the funding to support its Modular, Industry-Driven Apprenticeship Strategies program. The program prepares workers for high-demand advanced manufacturing jobs.

“Registered apprenticeships allow Pennsylvanians to earn a living while learning the skills that will allow them to excel in advanced, high-paying jobs,” U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) said. “This funding will create more opportunities for people across Pennsylvania to learn a variety of high-tech skills and join the work force in the industries that power our nation.”

The ABA Grant Program was created to help modernize, diversify, and expand the registered apprenticeship system in growing U.S. industries. It is part of a $244 million investment in registered apprenticeships nationwide.

The college has received federal funding in the past for its training programs. In 2010, it received $916,000 to provide green job training in energy efficiency and weatherization and in 2012 it received $14.9 million for a Marcellus Shale work force development program. The program also took place at Westmoreland County Community College.

In addition, the Steamfitters Local Union No 449 in Butler County received $322,000 for direct training services.
