A victim was able to break away from her kidnapper and flag down police in an incident that occurred today.

Williamston Police Capt. Beth Coltrain said a victim reported she and her infant child had been held against her will and assaulted with various objects, including a handgun.

Capt. Coltrain said, “The victim was able to break away and flee the residence, where she flagged down an officer to report the incident.”

According to police, N.C. Probation and Parole were already looking for the suspect on unrelated charges. They located Travon Best at 124 Hatton St. in Williamston and he barricaded himself inside the residence.

Probation and Parole were joined by officers with the Williamston Police Department and Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the residence. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

Travon Mondell Best, 23, was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping. He also faces charges in an unrelated incident for assault on a child under 12 and two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled substance.
