CHP: Man killed in crash near Willits after sideswiping other vehicle

A man was killed Sunday night after he sideswiped a vehicle and his pickup truck flipped on a road just east of Willits, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Just after 11 p.m., Julian Franks, 30, was driving a Toyota pickup truck east while partially in the westbound lane on Valley Road when the driver’s side of the truck hit the same side of a westbound Honda Accord, CHP-Garberville Sgt. Shawn Gordon said in a news release.

The truck then flipped onto its side and Franks, who was not wearing a seat belt, went out of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the crash site just east of Davidson Road.

The 16-year-old driver of the Honda was taken to Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits to be treated for minor injuries.

CHP-Garberville is investigating the collision. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected factors.
