It's the Port City Life newsletter, and it's a not John Staton person bringing it to you. A well-deserved vacation for John means you get a weekly dive into local arts and culture from me, Owen Hassell (imagine me doing that in an Al Franken voice).

Of course, the scene doesn't stop because we take time off. Can't stop, won't stop. Just this week we've seen filming begin here for another Amazon series plus more details on a documentary about the Wilmington 1898 massacre.

For now, here's a plan for another fun weekend in Wilmington presented by me, Owen Hassell.

    Weekend weather outlook

We're in the "there's at least a mild chance for some showers" part of summer.

Friday-Sunday carries rain chances of at least 60 percent. We might not see much sun while high temps will hover around the upper 80s.

Before John logged off, he left us with his weekly must-see guide for things to do during the weekend in the Wilmington area.

You can go "Rockin' the Suburbs" with a Ben Folds concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater or enjoy a local production at Thalian Hall of the Tony and Grammy winning musical "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical."

Good thing these eve nts aren 't so far away .

Our food scene is constantly evolving. To wrap up what's been a busy first six months of 2024, Allison Ballard put together a list of more than 50 restaurants and bars that have opened here this year. Have any of these become a favorite?

While not new to Wilmington, a sandwich chain plans to have a grand opening of its second location on Friday. And if you get in line early enough, there's a free sandwich waiting for you .

Allison also reminds us of the greatness that is Calabash-style seafood. Not that we should need one, but her story also notes how family seafood restaurants are seemingly disappearing . All the more reason to try these seven places now.
