An offensive explosion in a 14-4 victory Friday night at High Point-Thomasville didn’t enhance the Wilson Tobs’ position in the summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League’s standings — but it didn’t hurt them either.

The win left the Tobs still a game behind the Wilmington Sharks in the CPL East Division’s overall standings. Wilson and Wilmington, a 4-1 victor over Morehead City on Friday, are tied for second place in the second-half standings, both 5 1/2 games behind the Peninsula Pilots with six games remaining. The CPL regular season ends Saturday, July 27.

With Peninsula, the East Division first-half champion, on the verge to win the second half as well, the Tobs are battling the Sharks and, to a lesser degree, the Marlins for the second division playoff spot that will likely be awarded to the team with the second-best overall record.

The Sharks, through Friday night’s games, clung to second place with a 25-17 record. The Sharks have six games remaining, including next Friday at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington, while the Tobs, now 23-17, also have six games left but are idle Sunday and Monday after visiting the Greenville Yard Gnomes on Saturday. The Sharks have to play a doubleheader Monday at the Florence Flamingos.

Wilson’s last home games are against Morehead City on Tuesday, July 23; Peninsula on Thursday, July 25; and Greenville on Saturday, July 27 to end the regular season. Tuesday’s game, weather permitting, will feature “Paint the Park Pink” promotion and a postgame fireworks show that has been postponed three times by rain since July 6, including Thursday’s scheduled home game against Holly Springs. There will also be a fireworks display following next Saturday’s regular-season finale at Fleming.
