Local sobriety checkpoints: When & where

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — Sobriety checkpoints , where officials look for impaired drivers, are expected in several local communities over the next few days.

Here are the details we have so far:

Thursday, Aug. 22 :

The Stark County Sheriff’s office announced two checkpoints scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 22. The first will take place in Tuscarawas Township, at SR 241 and U.S. 30, starting at 6 p.m. The second will take place in Canton Township, at 4005 Southway St. SW, starting at 10:20 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 23:

The Newburgh Heights Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Cleveland Post announced a partnership to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Friday. The location of the checkpoint will be announced that morning.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink,” Newburgh Heights police said in a statement. “Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.”

The Supreme Court upheld the use of sobriety checkpoints , which are funded by a federal grant, back in 1990. However, certain protocols must be followed, including announcing the checkpoint to the public beforehand.

“Based on provisional data from the past three years, there have been 30 OVI related crashes within a three-mile radius of the checkpoint as well as 92 OVI arrests made,” OSHP’s Lieutenant Shaun Robinson recently explained in a statement.
