POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) — It was going to go into a landfill — instead, it will once again hold life and greenery.

A greenhouse was sitting abandoned at the Union Elementary School building in Poland. The school has been closed for a few years. Up the street less than a mile away, Holy Family Elementary School was fundraising to buy a greenhouse for educational purposes. Holy Family was told they could have it, but needed to come and get it.

That’s where Jim Merva and his fellow brothers with the Knights of Columbus stepped up.

“We’re really happy with the structure,” Merva said. “We’ll be cleaning it up and getting it growing in the next few weeks. And we’re pretty pleased with it, so we’re happy it all worked out. And thanks to all these people and those that made the donations that made it possible.”

Other schools in the Poland district were offered the greenhouse, but there were no takers. So what was old is now new again.
