    Sanitary sewer overflow reaches Bayou La Batre: MCHD

    MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Officials are encouraging area residents to take precautions after a reported sanitary sewer overflow reached Bayou La Batre.

    According to a Mobile County Health Department press release, the Utilities Board of the City of Bayou La Batre reported a sanitary sewer overflow on May 12 near 14395 Shell Belt Road.

    OVERFLOW LOCATION:

    It was caused by a pump failure at a master pump, the release said.

    Less than 1,000 gallons were discharged from the overflow, though officials say it reached Bayou La Batre.

    Health officials advise area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with standing water from the overflow.

    The release contained the following advisory:

    “Those who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.”

    “Area residents should take precautions when using Bayou La Batre for recreational purposes because of these overflows.

    “All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating.

    “People should wash their hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.”
