GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT) — The East Carolina baseball team is a staple around the Greenville community both on the field and off it. The team has a foundation, called Homers That Help, to raise funds for the patients at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital.

Funds raised by Homers That Help are donated to the ECU Health Foundation and then used to support pediatric patients and their families. First baseman Carter Cunningham started the foundation after visiting the patients at the hospital during winter break.

“It did start around Christmas break when we took a visit to the children’s hospital,” he said. “I got a lot of the guys to Venmo me a couple bucks, Coach (Cliff) Godwin donated money during that time, too, and we were able to drop off Christmas presents right before Christmas break.

“But I was praying just for ways that I could continue to give back to the community and give back to this children’s hospital specifically. And that’s sort of how the idea formed.”
