Quirky home in Maumee draws national attention on 'Zillow Gone Wild' page
A house for sale in Maumee has gone viral on the “Zillow Gone Wild” Facebook page for an eccentric feature originally meant to deflect unwanted attention: the house is covered — floor to ceiling, inside and out — with bulletproof Lexan paneling. The house, previously owned and occupied by Trudy Stranahan of the Champion Spark Plug Company’s founding family, also boasts a robust driveway that cost an estimated $300,000 to build, plus $100,000 in fences. Breezeways connect the house to two outbuildings, one of which hosts a gym with myriad equipment, in addition to more workout equipment inside the main house. “She was just a unique person,” said Hanna Modene, a Realtor with the Jon Modene team at Re/max Masters, which listed the property. “I don’t think she liked not having security.” The property sits on five acres overlooking the Silver Lake and bordering Side Cut Metropark. It was listed last week for $399,900.
MAC football coaches have differing views of league's division-less format
CANTON — The Mid-American Conference’s decision to eliminate the East and West Divisions for the upcoming season has brought about differing views amongst the league’s coaches. But if there is one thing they agree on, it’s that it will be an interesting transition. For the first time since the inaugural MAC title game in 1997, the top two teams based on conference regular season winning percentage will compete in the league championship. Coaches also seemed to be in favor of the pod system that was created based on geographic location and rivalries. “Now that we’re actually doing it, I’m for it, to be honest with you,” 11th-year Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said during Friday’s MAC media day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. “I love the pod concept, the fact that we get to play Central [Michigan] and Western [Michigan] every year is a big deal. The Michigan MAC is an important rivalry and trophy in our state.

During a sister city visit filled with formal proclamations and presentations, leaders from Nanchong, China, and China’s consul general to the United States took advantage of the unscripted moments to get to know the city of Toledo. The group, which included Nanchong’s mayor, several city councilmen, and a delegation from China’s consul general to the United States, Ping Huang, began the day with a boat ride along the Maumee River. As they passed landmarks like Owens Corning’s headquarters, sunflower murals, and the National Museum of the Great Lakes, all had their phones out to photograph the sights. More importantly, the ride offered the leaders an opportunity to speak informally. “When people meet each other, we get to know each other better,” Mr. Huang said. “As government officials, we need to create chances like this for people to have direct contact. … We’ve only been here for half a day, but we already saw lots of good things happening here. I didn’t know Toledo had such a beautiful river.”
