Des Moines’ first and only elevator death
I recently participated in an architecture walking tour of downtown Des Moines. I went with my mother and a handful of her friends for the southern tour of downtown that goes from the Civic Center to the World Food Prize and then makes its way around Court Avenue until it ends at the Kirkwood. My mother, a gem who I love dearly, mentioned at one point that the concrete corner of one of the buildings smelled like urine. She said this in her “outside voice” and quickly moved closer to the air flow.

Former Perry Softball Coach Looks Back on 15 Years
Tina Lutterman has stepped down as the Head Coach for Perry Softball. Over the last 15 years, Perry had a record of 181-290-2 under Tina’s leadership. The former coach shared some of her favorite moments over the years. “2016 the highlight game would be the the Regional Final against Dallas Center Grimes and that final pitch making it to state that one would still bring tears to my eyes. That’s a big one. The way that my season ended this year, just the way the team dug deep and pulled out two big wins that were definitely not supposed to happen that is a lot of pride there too.” It was more than just the games for Tina. “The relationships that I built with the players over the years and those that continue to stay in contact with me and reach out you know. There are some of them that reach out in the beginning of May every year and to say hey I’m thinking about you today feels like softball weather. I just really cherish those moments and know all the little things along the way that just made it really fun.”

DES MOINES, Iowa – State Treasurer Roby Smith is recognizing National Purple Heart Day by asking for Iowans’ help to reunite a Purple Heart held in Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, the State’s program for returning lost and unclaimed property. “I don’t think I can adequately put into words the magnitude of emotions I felt holding a Purple Heart for the first time,” said Smith. “Those same emotions inspire me to reunite Garold Hayes’ family with the Purple Heart found in his abandoned safe deposit box. I call out to Iowans to help us return this medal to the care of his family.” Hayes died in Sept. 2015 at the age of 76.
