Stop & Shop, Big Y delis have reopened after listeria prevention measures

UPDATE: Delis at Stop & Shop and Big Y have reopened, according to the supermarkets.

Stop & Shop and Big Y are temporarily closing their delis and removing several Boar's Head products for sale due to a potential listeria presence, the companies announced at midafternoon Friday.

According to a statement from Stop & Shop, the chain discarded all other deli meats and cheeses out of an abundance of caution because they could have been sliced or prepared in the same area as the affected products. The stores are conducting a thorough cleaning of their deli areas and equipment.

Both supermarkets said the deli closing were temporary. Stop & Shop stated it planned to reopen the deli later Friday.

The following products, all of which were sliced in the deli and purchased Friday or earlier, are being recalled by Stop & Shop:

• Boar's Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst
• Boar's Head Virginia Ham Old Fashioned Ham
• Boar's Head Italian Cappy Style Ham
• Boar's Head Extra Hot Italian Cappy Style Ham
• Boar's Head Bologna
• Boar's Head beef salami
• Boar's Head garlic bologna
• Boar's Head beef bologna

Customers who purchased an impacted product should discard it and visit their local store or contact customer service at 1-800-767-7772 for a full refund.

Big Y announced all Boar's Head liverwurst products would be recalled.

In addition to the liverwurst, Big Y announced it is recalling deli meat products produced on the same line and day as the liverwurst in case they are also impacted. Big Y will also destroy its meat and cheeses and conduct a deep clean of their deli areas.

"We are taking these steps out of an abundance of caution for our customers' safety," John Fraro, Big Y senior director of fresh foods, said in a statement. "To make sure we are breaking the supply chain, we will also be disposing of all product that may have come in contact with the affected products. We will continue to be vigilant and take precautions to prevent future incidents."

U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service is also encouraging customers who purchased the products to clean their refrigerators to reduce the risk of cross contamination.
