LENS CREEK, WV (WOWK) – After a landslide took out part of the roadway, repairs on Lens Creek Road are set to begin Monday, April 29, according to Boone County Delegate Josh Holstein (R). There is no current timeline for when the project will be finished.

The landslide happened April 12 just past where Kanawha County transitions into Boone County. It took a large portion of the road down the hill. It forced Lens Creek Road to become a one-lane road, adding extra time to people’s commute.

“Whenever it’s like 5 to 6 p.m., in the evenings when everybody is commuting home from work, you have significant wait times. There’s typically only 5 to 10 people who can get through the light at a time. It’s usually a 20 to 30-minute wait just to get through,” said Brenton Viars, a 10-year resident of Lens Creek.

Holstein says he met with Boone County Commissioner Jeff Petry, who works as an engineer for his day job, and they came to the same conclusion on what caused the landslip.

“We’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that the cement ditch line on the side of the road basically doesn’t extend all the way to the mountainside. So the waters undercutting it and going underneath the ditch lines, forcing its way underneath the road and outside the mountain,” said Holstein.

Holstein went on to say that the Department of Highways does not believe Lens Creek Road will need to be closed down during repairs, but it is possible if construction crews run into any problems that would require the road to be shut down.
