14 RVs, 1 camper damaged in overnight fire in Westmoreland County

Fifteen vehicles were damaged in an overnight fire at a Westmoreland County RV dealer.

Westmoreland County 911 said crews were called to a two-alarm fire at Camping World RV Sales in Apollo.

The fire was raging at 4:40 a.m., and a neighbor caught it on video.

“My husband and I woke up to a really loud boom we thought there was a gunshot or something and looked out the window and saw the fire,” said Rachel Ransey, who can see Camping World’s back parking lot from her backyard.

Ramsey called 911, along with other neighbors who heard loud popping sounds that police say could have been propane tanks exploding. She was nervous her house would catch fire.

“Yeah there was a big explosion. I don’t know what flew. Something flew in the pool. I think it was a bunch of ash,” she said.

Ten fire departments responded to bring the fire under control. But, as the flames spread they consumed 14 RV’s and a Mercedes camper. Some of the vehicles were burned so badly only shells were left.

“The gates were closed, they were still closed when the officers got here so we have no reason to believe anyone broke in,” said Dan Uncapher with the Allegheny County Police Department.

Police plan on looking at video from a security camera on a building that could offer clues into how the fire started. Pennsylvania State Police and the Fire Marshal are investigating to determine the exact cause.
