FORT MOORE, Ga — The Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore hosted a ceremony to remember the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes.

The ceremony was held at the Fort Moore Cemetery. Prayers, moments of silence, and national songs were played to honor the soldiers who fought for our freedom.

WRBL spoke with a Gold Star family member, Sue Peney, who makes an effort to be at this yearly ceremony.

Peney says, “I try to come to Fort Moore’s memorial service yearly. Otherwise, you can get into a blue funk and sit in your house in your reading chair just oh woe was me.”

WRBL also had the chance to talk with Garrison Chaplin Wallace Jackson about the importance of Memorial Day and sacrifice.

“It’s not just the moment in time in which someone loses something that’s important, but it’s a lifelong remembrance. It’s lifelong care,” he said.

Jackson continued, “When it hurts and it’s hard, I think that’s what sacrifice is.  It’s not something that’s easy. It’s easy to forget.  It’s easy to forget. And that’s why we come together to recharge our belief.”

In opening remarks, Brigadier General Michael Simmering asked, “Why would they sacrifice so much and for countless others to suffer lifelong wounds?”

Simmering says, ”Sacrifice only happens when a man or woman cares so deeply about something. They’re willing to give everything rather than give it up.”

“That’s what today’s ceremony is about. And the hope that love represents to the entire world that a nation of free people can govern themselves.” He says, “That we, the people, because we can unite when it matters, are capable of so much more.”

Garrison Chaplin Jackson also reflects on the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice as the 80 th anniversary of D-Day nears. He says it puts more weight on what a lot of soldiers who went before us did.
