MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis-Shelby County Schools has released a list of do’s and don’t for spectators ahead of the new football season.

The event security procedures posted on Social Media Friday are designed to keep players and fans safe and prevent guns and other weapons from entering any of the athletic facilities.

This comes a year after shots rang out during a fight at Memphis-Shelby County Schools Football Jamboree at Cordova High School. Police said someone fired a shot into the air at a stadium parking lot. No one was hurt, but the event ended early.

The school system is reminding students, parents, and staff that the clear bag policy is now in place at all events. Those participating or watching games will also be screened by metal detectors, and if they exit events will not be allowed back inside.

Parents with players gearing for the new football season said the reminder comes at the right time. Central High parent Charles Thomas said the rules allow kids to be kids.

“The way today’s society is, I think that any type of measures that we’re making to make our children safe I think is better,” said Thomas. “Him being able to come out and enjoy himself and not have to worry about what’s coming around the corner or who may be coming in that shouldn’t be here, I think that’s great.”

MSCS said it reserves the right to inspect all items that enter its facilities. The new football season kicks off next week.
