MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sunday, the first day of September, marks ‘ 901 Day ’ in area code 901, a day to celebrate our city through a wide variety of special activities..

With the celebration landing on Labor Day weekend, thousands are expected to celebrate across the city and in downtown Memphis.

A sea of Memphis and Shelby County employees kicked off the celebration downtown Friday.

“Just to recognize that on that special day means the world putting Memphis on the map at a higher level,” said Brian Harris, director of the Office of Youth Services.

It’s the first of many events recognizing the city’s culture and pride, like Sunday’s 901 Day event where Mayor Paul Young will hopefully have a flash mob dance down on Beale Street with the help of L.Y.E Academy’s Ladia Yates .

“(There’s) blues, country band, a violinist, poetry slam and we have a big artist showcase inside of Alfreds if you want some AC for a second,” Yates said.

The free, family friendly event happens all day Sunday.

Meanwhile on the Mississippi river, The BFF Cookout is set to take over Tom Lee Park.
