Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame to be unveiled next week

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – Local athletes, coaches and sports contributors who have made a lasting impact on Chesterfield County will be honored with a display at the River City Sportsplex.

Chesterfield Sports Visitation and Entertainment Executive Director, J.C. Poma, said nearly half a million visitors will see the Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame display at the River City Sportsplex each year.

“Whether that’s our residents playing on our fields, a visitor at one of our many tournaments, they will come to see these folks who have meant so much to our county in the history,” said Poma.

The display will show the stories of the first ten people to be inducted in the hall of fame earlier this year.

A committee selected the ten honorees from over 40 nominations. Notable inductees include Kellie Wells Brinkley, a track and field star who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, and NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin.

Poma said he hopes the Hall of Fame will inspire the young athletes.

“The best part of this Hall of Fame is to bring our youth together and show what that next generation of athletes and leaders have to look back on right here with a Hall of Fame,” said Poma.

The committee will add new names to the Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame every year, Poma said nominations are good for five years.

The inaugural Hall of Fame banquet and unveiling will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Perkinson Center for the Arts and Education. You can purchase tickets here .
