Claremont gears up for concerts, movies in the park
Enjoy the city’s annual summer tradition of concerts at Memorial Park, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd., starting at 7 p.m. each Monday from July 8 through August 26. This month’s performers include Cold Duck ona July 8, The Silverados on July 15, The Smokin’ Cobras on July 22, and Suave on July 29. Acoustical Mystery Tour follows on August 5, Pop Vinyl on August 12, The Snipes on August 19, and The Answer on August 26.

Artists returns to form with Bunny Gunner show
Sidelined since hip surgery in 2016, 79-year-old artist Sherie Garner has returned as part of a group show through August at Bunny Gunner Art Gallery, 230 W. Bonita Ave., Claremont. Garner works with a realism technique she calls “painting with pencils.” Her preferred medium is a suede board.
Midsummer Shakespeare Festival opens next week
Ophelia’s Jump Productions’ annual Midsummer Shakespeare Festival opens Thursday, July 11 with an 8 p.m. performance of Francis Beaumont’s “The Knight of the Burning Pestle” at Pomona College’s Sontag Greek Theatre, near 300 E. Bonita Ave., Claremont. Directed by Caitlin Lopez, “The Knight of the Burning Pestle” repeats July 13, 19, and 21.
A Q and A with Courier puzzle maker Gerald Gornik
Gerald Gornik creates the Hom-O-Phun puzzle for the Claremont Courier each week, and co-creates, with his wife Michele McLain, the Search n’ Link puzzle. Well, my first one was actually published in 1974 in the Upland High School yearbook. I was part of the yearbook staff and I, along with another guy, was tasked with the outstanding seniors section. I suggested that for the ‘most likely to succeed’ photo that we have the guy and girl sucking on seeds. As in, ‘most likely to suck seed.’ We had a photo of them with straws in their mouths which were dipped into a paper bag labeled ‘SEEDS.’ After the yearbook came out, I did an informal survey of my classmates to see if everyone ‘got it.’ No one did. I could literally not find one person who ‘got’ the joke.
