BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (WSPA) — A Spartanburg County high school will honor a student-athlete who died in a crash earlier this week .

According to Spartanburg County School District Two, Ethan Harrell was an 11th grader at Boiling Springs High School who played pitcher and 1st base on the baseball team.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said Harrell and two others were traveling north on an off-road side-by-side on Hardin Road near Henry Cash Road after midnight when the vehicle went off the right side of the road and overturned.

Troopers said Harrell was one of the passengers, later being airlifted to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning.

“The loss of our BSHS student Ethan Harrell has been a very difficult time for our students and staff,” the district said in a statement. “This Friday we plan to honor Ethan at our home football game in a number of ways.”

The Bulldogs will commemorate Harrell by wearing his #5 on their helmets. Harrell’s best friend, Kyle Patterson, will carry Harrell’s baseball jersey as the football team runs onto the field.

The district added that there will be a tribute made for Ethan from the announcer’s booth, as well as a t-shirt sale to help the Harrell family during this time.
