15 murals around Winston-Salem

We all know that Winston-Salem has a vibrant art scene — and we’re not just talking about SECCA (NC Museum of Art, Winston-Salem) or the Delta Arts Center. One of our all-time favorite galleries ? The Twin City itself.

Winston-Salem is home to a number of meaningful murals, street art pieces, and outdoor art exhibits. Today, we’re sharing where to find pieces that really paint a picture of our city.

🎨 “9th Wonder,” Trade and Liberty streets | By Scott Nurkin

The mural commemorates the legacy of local musician “9th Wonder,” who is a Grammy-winning producer. His greatest hits include “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” “Freeze Tag,” and “From my Heart and my Soul.”

🎨 The “5" Royales , the corner of Trade and 8th streets | By Elio Mercado

The new mural pays tribute to the quintet, which began as a gospel group in Winston-Salem and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

🎨 “La Luz de Diversidad” (The Light in Diversity), 400 block of North Trade and 4th St.| By Marianne DiNapoli-Mylet and 12 middle school students

Winston-Salem’s first and only Hispanic mural downtown was created as a gift from the Hispanic community to the city. The mural was painted in 1999 and got a face lift in 2017.

The mural depicts a body in a suit with a half-broken candy jar as the head and colorful candies rolling out of it.

The mural depicts people, businesses, and institutions that contributed to Depot Street (now Patterson Avenue) becoming one of the first prestigious Black neighborhoods in Winston-Salem.

The mandala artwork was completed in 2005 and was the first commissioned mural in Innovation Quarter.

🎨 “Honoring Black Excellence: Vol. 4,” North Liberty Street | By ADIDAS

This art piece is part of an ADIDAS project, which celebrates Black excellence and honors community members who exemplify those characters.

The mural seen above is painted on the side of Hilltop House Downtown Apartment Homes and showcases the natural beauty that the Twin City offers.

🎨 Sprague Street Community Center Mural , 1350 E. Sprague St. | By Marianne DiNapoli-Mylet

The mural on the east side of the city features 37 portraits of people who live in the neighborhood to feel seen and recognized.

🎨 Reboot Arcade Bar Mural , 534 N. Liberty St. | By multiple artists

The mural was painted in 2019 and depicts multiple cartoon figures like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario.

The 50-foot tall water tank mural of an American river otter, a species found along the Yadkin River in Forsyth County, was completed in 2018.

As an honor to the Black press in Winston-Salem, specifically “The Chronicle,” the mural features editors and their newspapers beginning as early as the 1700s through the 1960s, including longtime Chronicle publisher Ernie Pitt alongside Frederick Douglass.

The mural located in Industry Hill promotes unity, positivity, and the power of personal contribution in our community.

The artwork is part of Winston-Salem’s first art park, which connects the worlds of art and innovation. Pro tip: check out the park at night with vibrant lights for a unique experience.
